- Yourself, ready to go!
- Chair or blanket for the after race party and awards. You can set your chair up in the amphitheater before the race.
- Sunscreen
- Your race bib with attached DAG chip.
We do not have a bag check available. However, if you put your things in a bag and store it near the stage or by your chair, it shouldn't go missing, or at least it hasn't happened yet! If you discard an article of clothing along the race course, we recommend you do so near a water station. We can not guarantee it will be retrieved, but our race course setup crew will make every effort to pick up clothing as they close the course down. Any retrieved articles will be in a bin near the stage after the race has been completed. We will also keep them at the school for a week after the race. Any item left after that point, will be donated to charity.
The Half Marathon course will be re-opened to traffic after 3 hours, at 10:30 a.m. All remaining runners/walkers will be able to continue the race on the off-road, paved bike path, which is located on the south side of Hwy. 30-A. All walkers will be able to finish the race, and race timing will continue until 11:00 a.m. (3 1/2 hours after the start, accommodating those with a 16 minute/mile pace).
Half Marathon: The course is fast and mostly flat. The race is USATF certified, and will start and finish in downtown Seaside. From Seaside, the racers will run West along scenic Highway 30A, past the beach towns of Watercolor, Grayton, Blue Mountain Beach, and Santa Rosa Beach, with the halfway point and turnaround at Gulf Place. One lane will be closed to vehicular traffic, but caution should be used throughout the race course. Volunteers and police will monitor the cross traffic at all intersections, as much as possible. Volunteers and community groups will line the race course to cheer you on and provide entertainment.

Total Race Solutions (TRS) of Knoxville, Tennessee, will time the Seaside Half Marathon and 5K races. They will be utilizing the DAG chip system. The chip will be part of your race bib and can be disposed of after the race. No need to stop and remove your chip from your shoe right after the race and no financial penalty if the chip is not returned! However, if you do return your race bib to us after the race (look for marked bins), the school will be refunded a portion of the cost of the chips.
The DAG chip system is the latest and greatest in accurate timing equipment for races. It has been thoroughly tested and used in many of the top races throughout the country. The backup systems ensure that no racer is left out of the results.
Please pin your bib on the front of your shirt with four pins, one at each corner. Please do NOT attach your bib to the side of your shirt or shorts. The chip reader will not pick up your time if it isn’t attached to the front or back of your shirt. Please do NOT fold or wad up your bib. Doing so will ruin the antennae loop.
No transferring of assigned race bib with chip. They are computer coded to your own personal race day data (i.e.: age, gender, race division).
The race results will be based on a gun timed start.
DAG Timing Information: For event timing, TRS utilizes state of the art Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology from DAG-System which is a part of the French Company Pygmalyon. TRS uses this technology to gather times from the start/finish line. The major advantage of RFID Timing is its extreme accuracy and ease of use. The DAG-System RFID Chip that TRS uses is attached to the participant’s bib and is disposable. There is no need for the participant to attach anything to their ankle or shoe and there is no need for finish line personnel to collect the chip after the participant crosses the finish line. With the disposable system from DAG, each participant is scanned again as they exit the finish chute to achieve a 100% backup detection rate for each finisher. At the finish line, there are no mats to cross, the racers simply run through a overhead gate and proceed out of the finish line corral.
The DAG Chips are passive RFID devices that generate their power to transmit an identification signal when the chip passes through the electromagnetic field which is generated by the antenna gate. The DAG Chip does not contain an internal battery or power source. The DAG Chip does have a wire loop connected to each side of the chip. This wire and chip assembly is attached to the back side of the bib. As the chip moves through the electromagnetic field, a small current is induced within the wire and this small electrical pulse activates and energizes the chip. The chip then transmits a unique identification signal to the reader. The reader stores this unique identification code and the exact time received in a data base file.
Start Line:
- Get to the race early! Plan on arriving at least a half hour before your race starts; one hour is even better as traffic and parking could cause some delays.
- Dress warmly, but don't overdress if it's chilly. Dress in layers which you can peel off and either tie around your waist or leave at a water station. Old shirts or sweatshirts are good for starting the race in as they can be discarded early. Large trash bags with holes cut out for arms and your head also work well! Be sure NOT to discard an item in the middle of the road, however! Move to the side to discard your clothing, preferable near a water station. Discarded clothing will be collected by race volunteers, delivered to the stage area and if not picked up, donated to a local charity. We can not guarantee that all discarded clothing will be retrieved.
- Please practice common race courtesy. Line up in the appropriate corral, based on your expected finish time. In other words, if you know you are going to run a 3-hour half marathon, please do not line up in the 2-hour finish corral as this will make if difficult for others to pass you. If you are running with a group, please do not run more than two abreast in the early stages of the race as, again, this makes it difficult for faster participants to pass.
- Please thank a volunteer anytime you see one before, during, or after the race. This event would not be possible without them!
Finish Line:
- You've finished! Make sure to smile and raise those hands in celebration as you cross the finish line to ensure the best possible photo by the photographers.
- Keep moving as soon as you cross the finish line. Volunteers will be waiting to do a backup scan of the chip in your bib, give you your hard-earned medal (half marathoners), water, and provide you with whatever post-race assistance you need. Continuing to walk through the finish chute area not only prevents that area from getting backed up, but will aid in short term recovery. Continuing to move for 10 minutes or so after an endurance event will maintain your circulation, keeping the blood pumping through the muscles.
- Start sipping on fluids as soon as they are available, especially if you have been sweating profusely.
- Once you leave the finish area, meet family and friends, and relax. Get off your feet as soon as you can, and if possible elevate your legs to aid in recovery. Keep sipping fluids!
- As soon as your appetite begins to return, start eating! You want to replenish depleted stores as soon as you can - 30 minutes after exercising is the optimum window for maximum absorption. Enjoy the food and beer provided by Jim n Nicks!
- Start planning your trip to the 2009 Seaside Half Marathon and 5K :^)
Awards for both races will be given to the 1st place male and female in the Open, Masters, and Grand Masters divisions, with special awards designed by glass artist Russ Gilbert presented to the top half marathon finishers.
